Technique: The DJI Osmo Action 6 launches with a 38MP sensor and variable aperture lens for superior low-light performance

The DJI Osmo Action 6 introduces significant upgrades including a 38MP 1/1.1-inch sensor, a variable aperture lens from f/2.0 to f/4.0, and 50GB of built-in storage. It includes SuperNight mode for night photography and a new battery case that charges three batteries. The camera was released with a Macro lens and an optional FOV Boost lens, offering ultra-wide, wide, standard, and Natural Wide field of view options. It also features video-only film tone modes and 2× digital zoom. However, the DJI Osmo Action 6 is not available in the US due to tariff disputes.

Performance comparison

The DJI Osmo Action 6 outperforms the GoPro HERO13 Black in low-light conditions and offers more versatile shooting modes. According to a reviewer, the GoPro HERO13 Black is the best action camera for most people. GoPro retains strengths in video resolution and ecosystem support.

The GoPro HERO13 Black records 5.3K60p video and includes Hybrid Log Gamma HDR video. It retains the same sensor size as its predecessor, the HERO12. Improved heat management allows up to 1.5 hours of 4K60p recording without overheating. Battery life is also better. GPS functionality, absent in the HERO12, has been restored. The camera features magnetic mounts and supports the HB-series Lens Collection, which includes Ultra-Wide, Macro, and Anamorphic lenses plus a 4-pack of ND filters.

One verdict stated: "The GoPro HERO13 Black is the go to for serious creatives despite its unchanged sensor size."

Alternatives and context

Other recent action and vlogging cameras provide varied options for creators prioritizing different features. The table below compares key specifications.

The Insta360 X5 captures 8K 360° video using dual 1/1.28-inch sensors and can also capture 4K footage with a standard action camera field of view. Its successor, the Insta360 X6, was released with dual 1-inch sensors for improved low-light performance. The tiny Insta360 GO 3 weighs just 35g.

The DJI Osmo Nano records 4K 10-bit video with a D-Log M profile and is compatible with DJI Mics. It features a f/2.8 lens, Rock Steady 3.0 image stabilisation, and Horizon balancing technology with ±30° correction. It offers 13.5 stops of dynamic range. Without the optional Vision Dock, it provides up to 1 hour of 4K or 90 minutes of HD recording.

The Sony ZV-E10 II offers the option to change lenses via its E-mount, unlike other affordable ZV cameras with fixed lenses. It has built-in audio that rivals a decent external microphone and an articulating touchscreen useful for vlogging. It is not as easy to use as all-in-one cameras and lacks in-body image stabilization, a viewfinder, and photo-focused controls, making it less ideal for hybrid use.

The Panasonic Lumix S5 II offers open-gate 6K 30p, 4:2:2 10-bit, LongGOP, SSD recording, and 24MP stills. It features a Phase Hybrid autofocus system combining PDAF and Contrast Detect AF with 779-area metering. It supports unlimited internal 4K/60p 4:2:2 10-bit recording and FHD/180p for slow motion. The camera has in-body image stabilization up to 6.5 stops but lacks a tally light to indicate when recording.

Amateur Photographer's verdict said: "Making smart additions to a winning formula, the DJI Osmo Action 6 makes a case for itself as the action camera to beat." For those in the US unable to access the new model, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro remains a similar alternative.
