Arri has launched Film Lab 1.5, a major update introducing 8mm, 16mm, and 65mm film formats as new starting points for analog looks. This expansion moves the OpenFX plugin beyond its previous 35mm-only foundation, offering digital video editors more ways to recreate cinematic film aesthetics.

Arri launched Film Lab nearly a year ago as a tool for video editing and color grading workflows. The company calls Film Lab 1.5 a “major update” to its Film Lab plugin, expanding the creative options for digital video editors seeking an analog-inspired output. With the new format choices, Arri says Film Lab 1.5 gives users even more ways to recreate the distinct aesthetic of analog.

Enhanced creative controls and performance

Each new film format includes dedicated Grain Size and Rendition of Detail parameters for fine-tuning. These controls allow users to adjust the grain scale and the output's perceived sharpness, with both offering a adjustable range from 0.75 to 1.5.

The update also introduces an Anamorphic Ratio control with eight options, and a new Halation Spread control to manage the glow around highlights. In response to user requests, Arri has doubled the maximum values for both Grain Intensity and Halation Intensity, enabling stronger analog effects.

Performance sees a substantial boost. Film Lab 1.5 is up to four times faster than the previous version, promising smoother rendering and real-time 4K playback on a wider range of devices. Arri specifically notes that Apple Silicon-powered Macs offer more responsive performance.

Compatibility, pricing, and availability

Film Lab 1.5 adds support for ACES 2.0 ACEScc and ACEScct color workflows within applications like DaVinci Resolve and Baselight. The update is free for all existing license holders.

For new customers, the plugin is available for purchase. Pricing follows a subscription or lifetime license model.

Arri’s user-driven development approach

The company states that key updates, including the format expansion and performance improvements, come directly from user feedback. This approach has shaped the plugin's evolution to meet the practical needs of colorists and editors.

New users can buy Film Lab 1.5 through RE:Vision Effects or Arri’s own website. Existing users can upgrade to Film Lab 1.5 at no extra cost through the same channels.
