Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 VXD lens launches for Nikon Z mount
Tamron's compact 20-40mm f/2.8 zoom, previously a Sony exclusive, is coming to Nikon Z systems on October 22, priced at $729.

Tamron has announced a Nikon Z-mount version of its 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD lens, previously available only for Sony E-mount. The lens will be available for Nikon Z mount beginning October 22, priced at $729, offering a lightweight, constant-aperture option for photographers and videographers prioritizing portability.
Optical and mechanical specifications
The lens maintains the same optical design and performance across mounts, featuring 11 elements in 12 groups. This construction includes four LD (Low Dispersion) elements, two molded glass aspherics, and one hybrid aspheric element to control aberrations. The autofocus is driven by a Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive (VXD) linear motor, which is fast and quiet. For durability, the lens is sealed for dust and moisture resistance, and the front element has a fluorine coating.
The lens has a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout its zoom range. Its minimum focus distance is 6.7 inches, or 0.17 meters, from the front of the lens.
Physical characteristics and usability
Weighing 380g and measuring 89mm in length, the lens is compact for its class. It accepts 67mm diameter filters. The wide 20mm focal length is suitable for landscape, vlogging, and selfies, while the 40mm end adds versatility for portraits and snapshots. Its quiet autofocus and manageable size also make it suited for video shooting.
Availability and pricing for Nikon Z users
The Nikon Z-mount version will be available from October 22. Its price is set at $729. For comparison, the Sony E-mount version of the same lens launched in the fall of 2022 and carries a price of $699.

Context within Tamron’s lens lineup

It is complemented by a wider 12-20mm f/2.8 lens and longer options like the 35-100mm f/2.8 or the 35-150mm f/2-2.8, offering Z-mount creators a versatile standard zoom. Hillary K. Grigonis noted her perspective, stating, "With more than a decade of experience writing about cameras and technology, Hillary K. Grigonis leads the US coverage for Digital Camera World."
