Gear: Nikon has launched the Z5IIC, a $1,399 full-frame mirrorless camera

Nikon Corporation announced the release of the Nikon Z5IIC mirrorless camera on September 24, 2026. This full-frame 24.5 MP hybrid model is Nikon's first camera launch in over a year and a variant of the Z5II designed without a viewfinder. The Z5IIC is Nikon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera to feature scene modes directly on the mode dial.

Core Specifications and Value Proposition

The Z5IIC offers a suite of pro-level features at an entry-level price. It is built around a backside-illumination CMOS sensor and the EXPEED 7 image-processing engine. In-body image stabilization provides up to 7.5 stops of correction for slower shutter speeds. The body uses a rugged magnesium alloy frame with weather sealing for durability. For video, it supports 4K UHD recording at up to 60 fps and Full HD at up to 120 fps.

The camera is priced at $1,399, which is $300 cheaper than the Z5II. It is available in black and silver color options. The review model tested was the silver-topped version.

Key Feature Innovations

Nikon is explicitly targeting a new user base with this model. The company said "the 'C' in the name stands for 'casual'." This philosophy is most evident in the top-plate mode dial, which includes dedicated scene modes. Selecting a scene like Portrait, Food, or Night Landscape automatically adjusts more than six camera settings, including white balance and Picture Control.

A dedicated button provides instant access to Imaging Recipes. These are creative presets developed by Nikon and leading creators, which can be registered and recalled with a single press. The camera also includes the customizable Film Grain function first seen on the Nikon Zf, allowing users to add texture to their images.

Design and Practical Considerations

The Z5IIC achieves its lower cost and compact form by removing several features found on the Z5II. It lacks an electronic viewfinder (EVF), a joystick for autofocus point adjustment, and a dedicated AF-ON button. It also moves from two card slots to a single, side-mounted slot. The 3.2-inch vari-angle touchscreen monitor is used for all composition and playback, supporting gestures like double-tap, pinch, and swipe.

Despite these omissions, the body is ergonomically designed with a comfortable grip. The top plate has a smooth, streamlined design for easy bag insertion and removal. It is marginally lighter than the Z5II with its EVF. For connectivity, it features a micro HDMI port and supports UVC/UAC for use as a webcam when connected to a PC.

Performance and Advanced Tools

The Z5IIC delivers identical stills and autofocus performance to the Z5II released in April 2025. Nikon’s proprietary AI technology with deep learning detects subjects in AUTO mode, analyzing scenes to optimize exposure and focus settings. For videographers, the camera offers advanced tools including in-camera Raw recording, H.265 10-bit (MOV) and N-Log recording, and a tally lamp that lights up during capture. A Product Review Mode smoothly shifts focus to an item brought close to the camera, ideal for content creators.

It also supports slow-motion recording at 4x and 5x normal speed. When used with NIKKOR Z lenses, Nikon promises photo and video quality superior to smartphones. One reviewer noted, "The Z5IIC is, at the most basic level, just a Z5II with the EVF chopped off and a $300 drop in suggested retail price." The camera's value proposition is clear: it is the most affordable gateway into Nikon's full-frame mirrorless system, blending high-end specs with features tailored for ease of use and creative exploration.
