Laowa launches first full-frame 35mm
Venus Optics has introduced the Laowa Acris 35mm f/2.8 1x Macro Apo, the world's first full-frame autofocus 35mm lens with true 1:1 magnification, priced

Laowa has launched the world's first full-frame autofocus 35mm lens with true 1:1 macro capability. The new Laowa Acris 35mm f/2.8 1x Macro Apo lens provides a unique tool for photographers seeking environmental context in close-up work.
Key specifications
The lens combines a wide-angle perspective with true macro reproduction. Its fast f/2.8 aperture and apochromatic design aim for sharp, color-accurate images.
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Focal Length | 35mm |
| Aperture Range | f/2.8, f/22 |
| Maximum Magnification | 1:1 |
| Angle of View | 63.4° |
| Format | Full Frame |
| Minimum Focus Distance (AF) | 0.5m |
| Minimum Working Distance | 48.6mm |
It uses a Dual-Mode Hybrid Focusing system. Standard autofocus operates from infinity to 0.5 meters. A dedicated Macro Focus Assistance mode takes over from 0.5 meters down to the 1:1 reproduction ratio.
Mount options and weight
Autofocus functionality is available for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Canon EF camera mounts. For Canon RF and L-Mount systems, the lens is manual-focus only. The different versions have slight variations in size and weight.
| Mount | Weight | Dimensions (Diameter × Length) | Filter Thread |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony E | 560g | 79mm × 114mm | 72mm |
| Canon EF | 530g | 79mm × 87.4mm | 67mm |
The manual focus version supports focus-bracketing and focus-stacking for advanced macro techniques.
Design and performance
An optical construction of 13 elements in 10 groups forms the apochromatic design. Laowa states this design virtually eliminates both longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration. The autofocus version uses 9 aperture blades, while the manual focus model has 13.
All versions feature a weather-sealed, all-metal housing. This provides durability for use in various conditions.
Creative applications
The 35mm focal length offers a distinct advantage for macro photography. It allows photographers to include the subject's habitat and environment in the frame, not only extreme detail. This makes it suitable for capturing insects in situ or product shots with context.
Its wide-angle view also bridges genres. The lens can be used for street photography as well as close-up work. Laowa said it is "the world's first full-frame AF 35mm lens with true 1:1 magnification."
Some early impressions have been measured. One assessment described the lens as not particularly exciting, offering a lukewarm reception to its overall impact. Despite this, it provides a practical entry point. Photographers wanting to blend environmental storytelling with macro detail, or to switch seamlessly between street and close-up shooting, now have a dedicated tool.
