Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, promising significant camera improvements led by a new variable aperture system. The phones start at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively, and are available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options.

A New Main Camera System

The iPhone 18 Pro series features a redesigned 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture. Apple states this provides "creative control that wasn’t possible before." The system uses six aperture blades, each thinner than a human hair, designed to be lightweight and durable. A new custom lens ensures image quality is maintained across the entire aperture range.

In low-light conditions, the aperture opens to let in approximately 50% more light. This enhancement aims to improve Night Mode photography and overall performance in darker environments.

Enhanced Camera and Video Features

Control extends to the upgraded built-in Camera app. Photographers can manually adjust the aperture, shutter speed, and white balance. While third-party apps have offered similar features, Apple is bringing significantly enhanced Pro controls to its native application. The company also says it will update its API to give developers complete access to the new variable aperture system.

Apple's computational imaging pipeline is new. It aims to produce sharper, more detailed shots. Upgraded Photographic Styles now include new texture and grain controls for further creative adjustment.

For video, the iPhone 18 Pro builds upon its predecessor's capabilities. Users can apply Cinematic effects after capture at up to 60 frames per second. The Time-lapse mode now supports 4K and Dolby Vision HDR. Audio Mix algorithms have been improved to enhance voices and music.

Authenticity and Software Integration

A new tool called Apple Reference Image signs photos at the sensor level. This authenticity data lives with the original file indefinitely. Apple describes it as a digital negative to visually confirm what was in the shot at the moment of capture.

Apple Intelligence, the company's AI system, integrates deeply with the camera. A new Siri AI mode introduces advanced Visual Intelligence to the built-in Camera app. In the Photos app, improved cleanup tools, generative expand, and a Spatial Reframing tool that adjusts a photo's perspective after capture are promised. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said the phone provides "more versatility for creators and more control for pros."

Underlying Hardware Performance

The new features are powered by the 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip. It has a 6-core CPU with two new super cores, promising up to 20% better performance. Apple claims these are the fastest CPUs in any smartphone and are "desktop-class." The GPU offers up to a 40% graphics improvement, and Neural Accelerators are up to twice as fast as before.

Thermal performance is a focus. The iPhone 18 Pro’s vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the one in the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple promises a 40% sustained performance gain versus the prior model and the highest sustained performance on any iPhone ever. Despite a thinner design, battery life is improved, with the iPhone 18 Pro Max offering 45 hours of video playback.

Apple's new leasing program, Apple Upgrade, starts at $34.99 per month for 24 months, with potential lower costs using a trade-in. The report comes from PetaPixel.
