Richard Avedon’s influence on portrait photography is undeniable, with his minimalist style inspiring generations of photographers. His ability to capture the raw essence of his subjects, often against stark white backdrops, set a new standard for the genre. Avedon’s work is particularly notable for its ability to reveal the depth of character behind a person’s exterior, a technique that remains influential today.

## The ‘In the American West’ Series

Avedon’s *In the American West* series, currently exhibited at the **Fundación Mapfre** in Madrid, represents a significant departure from his usual subjects-fashion models and celebrities. Commissioned in 1985, the project involved traveling to 21 U.S. states and conducting over 1,000 sittings, resulting in 126 editioned images. The series focuses on ordinary working-class Americans, capturing their lives with a gritty realism that was groundbreaking at the time.

The exhibition, curated by Clément Chéroux of the **Fondation Cartier-Bresson**, features works on loan from The Richard Avedon Foundation. Avedon’s approach involved taking portraits outdoors using natural light and minimal props, often retaining the black border from the film negative edge to enhance the striking visual impact. Many of these images have not been publicly displayed since their original 1985 exhibition in Fort Worth, Texas, making this a rare opportunity to experience Avedon’s masterful work.

## Avedon’s Technique and Legacy

Avedon’s technique for *In the American West* involved using an **8×10 Deardorff camera**, a choice that contributed to the series’ distinctive aesthetic. By stripping away distractions and focusing on the subject’s expression and presence, Avedon created portraits that are both intimate and powerful. His ability to reveal the inner world of his subjects, whether celebrities or everyday people, remains a hallmark of his work.

The exhibition runs at **Fundación Mapfre** in Madrid until **August 30, 2026**, with tickets priced at **€5**. Free entry is available on **August 19**, **World Photography Day**. For more information, including opening times and concession rates, visit the foundation’s website.
