Gear: Sigma has launched a compact full-frame zoom lens for L-mount and Sony E-mount cameras

Sigma has announced the 20-60mm F2.8-4 DG Contemporary, a new full-frame zoom lens. It is designed as a compact and versatile upgrade from typical kit lenses for photographers using L-mount or Sony E-mount camera systems.

One of the lens's primary appeals is its portability. It weighs 385 grams and measures 88 millimeters in length at its shortest setting. The lens accepts 67mm filters and features dust and splash resistance, along with a water and oil-repellent coating on the front element. Control is minimal, limited essentially to a zoom ring.

Optical Design and Performance

The optical construction uses 15 elements in 13 groups, incorporating three aspheric lenses and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements. Its close-focusing capability reaches 15.8 centimeters at 28mm, yielding a maximum magnification ratio of 0.43x. At the telephoto end, the magnification is 0.34x.

Autofocus is driven by a linear motor, which Sigma says provides a responsive experience. However, DPReview notes that Sony cameras limit continuous autofocus with third-party lenses to 15 frames per second, capping the benefit of this motor on that platform.

Size, Corrections, and Practical Use

According to DPReview's first impressions, the lens is notably compact for a full-frame design. To achieve its small size and weight, the lens relies heavily on in-camera digital distortion correction. This correction is typically automatic on L-mount bodies but must be manually enabled by photographers using Sony E-mount cameras.

The aperture begins at F2.8 but narrows quickly. When tested on a Panasonic body, the aperture reportedly changed to F2.9 before reaching 21mm. This leads DPReview to suggest the lens performs more like an F4 zoom than an F2.8 one.

Comparison with Existing Lenses

The report positions the Sigma 20-60mm against several existing zooms for the same mounts. It is described as smaller and more ambitious than the Panasonic 20-60mm F3.5-5.6, and much more compact than the Sony 20-70mm F4. Compared to the Tamron 20-40mm F2.8, the Sigma offers greater zoom range, which the source suggests may be more valuable for everyday use than the Tamron's brighter aperture.

Availability and System Limitations

The most significant limitation is mount availability. The lens will only be offered for the L-mount and Sony E-mount. It will not be made for Nikon Z or Canon RF mounts, which DPReview argues is a missed opportunity for pairing with budget cameras like the Canon EOS R8 and Nikon Z5II.

The lens will retail for $849. Sales begin on October 6. The source concludes that for photographers on supported systems, this lens represents a compelling step-up option that does not sacrifice size or versatility for improved light-gathering capability over a standard kit lens.
