OM System teases compact retro mirrorless

OM System has revealed a new compact retro mirrorless camera is coming on September 09. This launch teaser coincides with a report from Japan suggesting the company's camera sales have dipped by about 10,000 units compared to the previous year.

According to a report cited by Digital Camera World, OM System shipped 150,000 cameras, a drop of approximately 10,000. The same report indicated the company's operating profit was in the red to the tune of -¥1.6 billion.

The Teaser Reveal

OM System shared a glimpse of the back and top sections of the camera earlier this week. The teaser was unusually revealing, showing the camera without the typical shadowy concealment. Its rangefinder-style viewfinder sparked immediate speculation among longtime fans. Many hope it signals a revival of the beloved PEN F series.

A second teaser strengthened this connection. It displayed the 1959 Olympus PEN and the 2009 PEN E-P1, the brand's first digital mirrorless camera.

Market Context and Speculation

The teased camera will be OM System's first major camera launch of 2026. The company has not launched a new general model outside of specialized variants like the OM-3 Astro and OM-1 Mark II Infrared this year. While launching one camera a year is not unusual for the brand, the reveal comes amid a reported sales slump.

OM System is not publicly traded, so detailed sales figures are not available. The report from Japan, however, suggests a challenging period. It noted that Ricoh overtook OM System in a recent ranking of Japan's top camera brands by units shipped. This shift was attributed more to Ricoh's sales tripling, likely due to the popularity of its GR IV series, than to OM System's decline.

Technical Expectations

OM System has utilized a 20MP sensor in its Micro Four Thirds lineup since 2016, cycling through two sensor variants at that same resolution over the past decade. The company says sensor development is ongoing. Its recent focus has been on building rugged, outdoor-oriented cameras that leverage the compact design of the Micro Four Thirds system, its well-regarded stabilization, and computational photography capabilities.

If the new camera is a PEN line refresh, it could potentially boost sales. The last PEN model with worldwide availability launched in 2020 under the Olympus brand. The Olympus PEN E-P7 followed in 2021 but was limited to Asia and Europe. Fans are now eagerly awaiting the official unveiling on September 09.
