The Neewer Q120 flash unit is a compact and powerful off-camera flash that packs impressive control and connectivity into a camera-bag-friendly design. According to the Amateur Photographer, this flash is small and lightweight, making it easy to carry around. It also has excellent connection with triggers and fully features TTL and Manual controls.

Key Features

The Neewer Q120 has a 120W output and is compatible with Canon, Nikon, and Sony versions. It also has a modelling light built into the head, although it is only 3W, adjustable over ten steps. The flash power output is the same as the Neewer Z3R hotshoe flash, and it has strobe modes of up to 100Hz, five groups, high speed sync, and front/rear sync.

The Neewer Q120 is designed to be fixed on a stand and fired remotely, and it is compatible with Godox X system triggers and flashes. This means it can be used as a transmitter or receiver in a group of Godox heads. It also has optical slave triggering, which means it can be tripped with any flash, new or old.

Build and Handling

The Neewer Q120 is made very nicely, with a solid and rugged build. The controls on this model are very similar to those of other Neewer Q or Z flash units, and the standard locking feature requires the user to turn the control wheel to bring the unit to life after pressing the on/off button. The small-but-readable rear screen displays all the necessary information about the modes and settings that are in operation.

In Use

The Neewer Q120 is nicely powerful, with a measured f/16 at 2m and ISO 100, which is equal to the output of the Neewer Z3R. It is a good match for the bright summer sun, and it can fill shadows nicely and even overpower the sun with a nice direct blast to the face from 10-12 feet. The head comes with a domed diffuser, which snaps over the flash and is held in place by magnets, knocking about half a stop from the output but dramatically altering the characteristic of the light.
