Leica Q3 43 Launch Redefines Premium Compact Cameras
Leica’s September 2024 release of the Q3 43, a 60-MP full-frame compact with a new 43-mm f/2 lens, has shifted industry focus toward fixed-lens high-resolution systems.

Leica launched the Q3 43 in September 2024, a premium compact camera featuring a 60-megapixel full-frame sensor and a new 43-mm f/2 fixed lens. The model builds on the Q3’s compact form and autofocus system but replaces the long-standing 28-mm f/1.7 Summilux with a lens designed to mimic natural human perspective.
The Q3 43’s 43-mm focal length was chosen to provide a field of view closer to what most photographers see with their eyes. Leica explained that this length offers a “natural perception” perspective, allowing subjects to be captured with minimal perspective shift when the camera is raised. The lens is apochromatically corrected and engineered for high sharpness and contrast even at its maximum f/2 aperture, a departure from the faster f/1.7 of the 28-mm version.

While the 28-mm lens excels at environmental, travel and street photography, the 43-mm option appeals to shooters who prefer a tighter frame without digital cropping. The author notes that the new lens “opened the Q system up to photographers like me” who naturally isolate subjects or want a more conventional perspective.
Leica was not the first to offer a more normal focal length on a premium fixed-lens camera. Ricoh launched the GR IIIx in 2021 with a 40-mm-equivalent lens as a response to demand for an alternative to the 28-mm GR III. Leica’s move, however, applied that concept to the very top end of the market and demonstrated that consumers were willing to invest heavily in a single-lens, high-resolution system.
At launch, the Q3 43 was hard to obtain. Stock vanished, retailers ran waiting lists, and the author witnessed eight units in use within a week of release-six in London and two on a Cornwall beach. Compared with the thousands of bodies circulating from Canon, Sony or Nikon, the sighting of eight new Leica units was striking and suggested the camera was attracting users beyond the traditional Leica collector base.
The Q3 43’s arrival coincided with a renewed interest in premium fixed-lens cameras. Fujifilm unveiled the GFX100RF in March 2025, pairing a 102-MP large-format sensor with a 28-mm-equivalent prime lens. Sony followed in July 2025 with the RX1R III, a 61-MP full-frame camera featuring a fixed 35-mm f/2 Zeiss lens and optional step-crop shooting. While development cycles mean these products were likely in design before the Q3 43 reached consumers, the author argues that Leica helped validate the market’s appetite for expensive, highly specialised fixed-lens systems.
The Q3 43 shifted the conversation from “can I live with a fixed lens?” to “which fixed lens do I want?” By turning focal length into a model choice rather than a limitation, Leica expanded the premium compact market. The camera’s availability has since stabilized; UK retailers such as Park Cameras and Wex list it in stock or with limited quantities, indicating it has moved from a coveted novelty to an established part of the Q family.
Leica’s Q3 43 has therefore not only broadened the range of fixed-lens options but also confirmed that photographers are willing to pay for a single, optimised lens that delivers high resolution and optical performance without the complexity of interchangeable-lens systems.
