Pentax Q's Potential Revival

A renewed interest in compact cameras and smartphone photography may make the time right for the Pentax Q's comeback.

News: A renewed interest in compact cameras and smartphone photography may make the time right for the Pentax Q's comeback

The Pentax Q, a tiny mirrorless system, was first introduced in 2011. It was the smallest interchangeable-lens mirrorless system available at the time, with dimensions of 98×57.5x31mm. The system included eight lenses, with some as small as a 70-200mm zoom and a 100mm prime, that could fit in a pocket.

However, the system ultimately failed due to its 1/2.3-inch sensor size, which was deemed too small for serious image-making. The introduction of full-frame mirrorless cameras in 2013, such as the Sony A7 series, also contributed to the decline of the Pentax Q.

Fast-forward to 2025, and the photography landscape has changed. Many images are now taken on 1/2.3-inch sensors, which are commonly found in smartphones. As a result, big tech firms have invested heavily in improving image quality from these sensors. Meanwhile, full-frame mirrorless cameras have become larger, more expensive, and less accessible to hobbyists.

A renewed interest in compact cameras and smartphone photography may make the time right for the Pentax Q's comeback. The system's small size, pop of colours, and digital filters, which pre-date Fuji's Film Simulations, could appeal to a new generation of users.

## A Refreshed Pentax Q System

A refreshed Pentax Q system could be a huge hit with users who appreciate the convenience and unique features of the original system. The addition of modern image processing and a set of compact lenses could make the system even more appealing.

## Pricing and Affordability

However, any potential revival of the Pentax Q system relies on one crucial factor: affordability. The system must be priced right to appeal to a wide range of users. If priced too high, it may struggle to compete with other options in the market.

| Model | Sensor Size | Release Year | | --- | --- | --- | | Pentax Q | 1/2.3-inch | 2011 | | Pentax Q7 | 1/2.3-inch | 2012 | | Pentax Q10 | 1/2.3-inch | 2012 | | Pentax Q-S1 | 1/1.7-inch | 2014 |
